Ajo’s Scenic Loop: A Desert Drive Worth Discovering

For visitors planning a trip to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, the Scenic Loop makes an excellent companion adventure. It offers the same kind of dramatic desert beauty, including towering saguaros, sculptural organ pipe cactus and expansive mountain views, but with a character all its own.

Best of all, it is close enough to enjoy as a morning drive, a late-afternoon outing or an unhurried introduction to the landscape surrounding Ajo.

A Front-Row View of the Sonoran Desert

The Scenic Loop begins near the edge of town before continuing onto an unassuming dirt road and opening into the gorgeous desert. Almost immediately, the neighborhood begins to fall away and the landscape stretches out around you.

Along the route, visitors may see saguaros, ocotillo, cholla and organ pipe cactus growing across rocky slopes and sandy washes. The changing terrain offers a beautiful look at how varied the Sonoran Desert can be. One stretch may feel open and expansive, while the next passes through a lush arroyo where underground water supports larger trees, dense vegetation and abundant birdlife.

Bring binoculars and keep watch for wildlife such as the endangered Sonoran pronghorn, bighorn sheep, coyote, javelina, bobcat and other desert animals. Birding enthusiasts will delight in seeing native birds such as the Cactus Wren, Verdin, Curve-billed Thrasher, Gila Woodpecker and Gambel’s Quail in their natural habitat. Sightings are never guaranteed, of course, but the quieter pace of the loop makes it a rewarding place to slow down, listen and look closely.

Mining History Written Across the Landscape

The drive also tells part of Ajo’s mining story.

As the route curves around the back side of the historic New Cornelia Mine, the scale of the landscape begins to shift. Massive earthworks and traces of past mining activity rise beside mountains, washes and open desert. Old diggings, mine shafts and remnants of earlier roads can still be seen in places along the route.

Near the beginning of the drive, look toward the mountains for the large cross honoring John Campbell Greenway, Ajo’s first mine superintendent and one of the town’s founders. Farther along, the rear of the New Cornelia Mine comes into view, offering a perspective that many visitors never see from town.

The loop also passes areas connected to Ajo’s earlier ranching and homesteading history. These layers make the drive more than a scenic outing. It is also a journey through places that shaped this corner of the desert.

Getting to the Ajo Scenic Loop

From the Ajo Plaza, turn right onto Highway 85 and then left onto Rocalla Avenue. Continue west through Ajo’s historic residential neighborhood for about four minutes.

As you leave the residential area and the desert opens ahead, Rocalla Avenue reaches the beginning of the loop road, which Google Maps initially labels as Alley Road.

Farther along, the road may appear on Google Maps as Scenic Loop Road and Darby Wells Road. Visitors can also search for “Ajo Scenic Loop” in Google Maps, where a pin marks the route.

Several smaller roads branch away from the main road, but staying on the primary loop creates an outing of approximately 10 miles round trip.

Take It Slow

While the Scenic Loop is unpaved, bumpy and rugged in places, a standard two wheel drive vehicle is perfectly suitable, so buckle up and take your time. The slower pace is part of the experience, giving you more opportunity to notice the cactus and plant specimens, desert washes, wildlife and changing mountain views.

Pull fully to the side before stopping for photographs, and avoid entering private property or taking unfamiliar offshoot roads.

Road conditions can also change after rain. Never attempt to cross a flooded wash, and use extra caution if storms have recently passed through the area.

Bring extra water, sun protection and a fully charged phone. There are no visitor services along the loop, so it is best to fuel up, use the restroom and gather anything you need before leaving town.

Early morning and late afternoon are especially beautiful times to go, offering softer light, slightly cooler temperatures compared to the intense heat of the day and better opportunities for wildlife viewing.

Places to Pause and Take It In

Although the Scenic Loop can be completed fairly quickly, it is best enjoyed without rushing. There are many places where the views invite you to pause for photographs or simply sit quietly and take in the surroundings.

The landscape changes constantly along the way. At times, the road feels tucked against rocky hillsides. Elsewhere, it opens onto broad desert valleys filled with cactus and distant mountain views.

The loop is especially rewarding for photographers, birders and anyone who enjoys exploring a place slowly. Even familiar desert plants can look completely different depending on the season, the time of day and the angle of the sun.

A Natural Addition to an Ajo Stay
