Ajo Artisans Mercado Returns: Shop Local, Explore the Plaza & Make a Day of It

There’s something special about this time of year in Ajo.
As temperatures cool and beautiful desert days return, the Historic Ajo Plaza comes alive with artists, makers, neighbors and visitors gathering for one of the community’s favorite seasonal traditions: the Ajo Artisans Mercado.
The 2026–27 Ajo Artisans Mercado season begins Saturday, November 14, welcoming visitors to the Historic Plaza every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through mid-May for a lively mix of local art, handmade goods, food, music and unmistakable Ajo character.

Held beneath the iconic arches and palms of the Historic Ajo Plaza, the Mercado is more than a place to shop. It’s an opportunity to slow down, meet local artists and makers, enjoy the beautiful weather and experience the creative community that makes Ajo such a memorable place to visit.
The Mercado is independently organized by local creatives in collaboration with Art Under the Arches Gallery & Gifts, and past markets have featured artists and makers from throughout the region.

Shop Local in the Heart of Ajo
Visitors can expect an ever-changing collection of handmade arts and crafts, locally made foods, baked goods, plants, books, vintage finds and other one-of-a-kind creations.

And because no two Mercado Saturdays are quite alike, there’s always something new to discover. Live music also frequently adds to the atmosphere, making the Plaza an especially inviting place to linger for the morning.

Grab a coffee, browse the vendor tables, find something made right here in the Sonoran Desert and enjoy one of the prettiest gathering places in southern Arizona.

Make a Day of It
The best part? The Mercado can easily become the starting point for a full day exploring Ajo.
After browsing the market, stop into Art Under the Arches Gallery & Gifts, a nonprofit cooperative showcasing paintings, photography, ceramics, sculpture and work by local and regional artists.
Then grab a coffee or a bite at Oasis Coffee, or settle in for something to eat at Fat Cactus at the Plaza Both are right at the Plaza, making it easy to spend a leisurely morning without ever needing to move your car.

From there, take a walk around town and discover Ajo’s colorful murals, historic architecture and public art. Murals can be found throughout the community, including Artists Alley and several locations surrounding the town center.

The Plaza itself is worth taking time to explore. With its graceful arches, historic train depot, green central park and surrounding whitewashed buildings, it remains one of Ajo’s defining landmarks and a beautiful backdrop for a sunny desert Saturday.

Want to Become a Mercado Vendor?
The Ajo Artisans Mercado also welcomes new vendors, including both year-round residents and seasonal members of the community.
Vendors do not have to participate every weekend.

The Mercado accepts offerings including handmade arts and crafts, properly licensed homemade foods and baked goods, locally grown plants and produce, farm-raised goods, self-authored books, select one-of-a-kind vintage or antique items, and products uniquely designed by the vendor.
If you're interested in participating, the first step is simple:
Email: ajoartisansmercado@gmail.com
Include your name, phone number and email address along with a short description of what you would like to sell. Photos of your work are encouraged. A member of the Mercado committee will then follow up with additional information and help new vendors prepare for their first market.
Stay a Little Longer
Market morning is only the beginning.
Late fall through spring is one of our favorite times to experience the Sonoran Desert, with comfortable days made for walking, exploring, sitting beneath the Plaza arches or heading out to discover more of Ajo and the surrounding landscape.

Instead of making the Mercado a quick stop, turn it into an Ajo getaway.
Spend Saturday discovering the Plaza, local art and murals, enjoy an unhurried meal, watch the desert light change in the evening—and give yourself another day to explore.
We’ll be happy to welcome you to the Sonoran Desert Inn.
