OUR STORY & MISSION
Rooted in place, guided by purpose.
From a 1940s elementary school annex to a community-driven destination, the Sonoran Desert Inn & Conference Center was born from a vision of place, creativity, and purpose. As a nonprofit organization, we exist to attract visitors to Ajo and the surrounding Sonoran Desert, support local artists and entrepreneurs, and foster meaningful connections between people and place. Our history, rooted in education and community, continues today in the hospitality we offer, the partnerships we nurture, and the experiences we share with every guest.

A Schoolhouse Rooted in the Ajo Community
The Sonoran Desert Inn & Conference Center is housed in a former elementary school annex built in the 1940s as part of the historic Curley School campus. For decades, this building served as a place of learning for generations of Ajo residents. In 2011, it was thoughtfully renovated and reopened as a nonprofit inn and gathering space—continuing its legacy as a place where people come together.
Today, the Inn is part of the larger Curley Creative Campus, a shared environment where history, creativity, and community remain central to everyday life.

Hospitality with Purpose
The Sonoran Desert Inn & Conference Center is Arizona’s only nonprofit inn. Our mission is rooted in the belief that hospitality can be a force for positive impact. By attracting visitors to Ajo and the surrounding Sonoran Desert, we help support local economic development through direct employment and partnerships with artists, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
Every stay contributes to the vitality of the community—strengthening connections between visitors and the place they’ve come to experience.

TESTIMONIAL
“Me, my brother and mother all attended school here at this building...I was so excited and was looking forward to seeing what has become of our old school. I couldn’t believe what I saw: our room was comfortable, cozy and clean, and room decor and bedding was beautiful!”
— Debbie, Camp Verde, AZ

Part of the Curley School Creative Campus
The Inn is an integral part of the Curley School Creative Campus, a living, working space that includes artists, residents, and creative organizations. Murals, handcrafted details, and public art are woven throughout the campus, reflecting Ajo’s vibrant creative spirit and long history of cultural exchange.
Guests are invited to experience this shared campus with care and respect—embracing a slower pace, appreciating the artistry around them, and recognizing that they are part of a community-oriented environment.

Designed for Thoughtful Travel
The Sonoran Desert Inn is intentionally designed for travelers seeking a calm, meaningful experience. Our rooms encourage guests to unplug from daily routines, enjoy quiet evenings, and reconnect with the rhythms of the desert. We welcome individuals, families, and groups who value creativity, connection, and respect for shared spaces.
This is not a party destination, but a place for reflection, conversation, and discovery—where the desert itself sets the pace.

Our Impact
Staying at the Sonoran Desert Inn & Conference Center directly supports local artists, small businesses, and community initiatives. Revenue from the Inn helps sustain creative programming, preserve historic spaces, and contribute to Ajo’s ongoing revitalization.
Hospitality here is more than a service—it’s a shared investment in the future of the community and the cultural landscape of Southern Arizona.

Looking Forward
As Ajo continues to evolve, the Sonoran Desert Inn & Conference Center remains committed to thoughtful growth rooted in creativity, collaboration, and care for place. We look forward to welcoming guests who share these values and are curious to experience the Sonoran Desert in a deeper, more meaningful way.
